How this calculator works

Roofline footage gets a corner-and-droop allowance before dividing by string length. Tree wrapping treats the tree as a series of horizontal loops stacked up its height, each loop as long as the tree's circumference:

roofline_ft_with_allowance = total_roofline_ft × (1 + extra_allowance%)
roofline_strings = ceil(roofline_ft_with_allowance / string_length_ft)

tree_wrap_ft = tree_circumference_ft × (tree_height_ft / vertical_spacing_ft)
tree_strings = ceil(tree_wrap_ft / string_length_ft)

Vertical spacing is how far apart each horizontal wrap sits up the tree — 1 ft is a common default for a nicely lit look; tighter spacing uses more lights for a denser effect.

Worked example

A 40 ft front roofline plus a 20 ft side roofline, 10% allowance, plus a 10 ft tall, 8 ft circumference tree at 1 ft spacing, all in 25 ft strings:

  1. Roofline: (40 + 20) × 1.10 = 66 ft. Strings: ceil(66 ÷ 25) = 3 strings.
  2. Tree wrap: 8 × (10 ÷ 1) = 80 ft. Strings: ceil(80 ÷ 25) = 4 strings.
  3. Total: 3 + 4 = 7 strings.

At $12 per string plus a flat $15 for extension cords and clips, that example totals 7 × $12 + $15 = $99.

Measuring your roofline and tree

  • Roofline runs — measure each straight section of eave separately, in linear feet.
  • Tree height — measure to where you want the lights to stop, not necessarily the very top.
  • Tree circumference — measure around the widest part of the tree you're wrapping, or estimate from its diameter (circumference ≈ diameter × 3.14).
  • String length — pick whichever standard length matches what you're buying; mixing lengths is fine, just run this calculator once per length.

How much do Christmas lights cost?

Rather than quoting a national average that's stale the day it's published, this calculator prices the job from what you actually enter. Give a price per string and an optional flat amount for extension cords and clips, and both are itemized and totaled. The estimate doesn't include a timer, installation labor, or ladder rental.

A single-story home's front roofline commonly runs 40 to 60 linear feet, typically needing 2 to 4 strings of 25 ft lights. A full house perimeter often runs 150 to 250 total linear feet.

How much extra length should I budget for corners and drooping?

Roughly 10% extra beyond the straight-line measurement is a common rule of thumb, since strings follow the roofline's shape at corners and naturally droop between clips.

LED vs incandescent — does string length or coverage change?

Not physical length — both come in similar standard lengths. LED strings are lighter and more efficient, and can often connect in longer combined runs before needing a separate outlet than incandescent strings.

How many outlets or amps does a run of lights need?

As very general reference, a household circuit is commonly rated 15 to 20 amps, with some capacity reserved. Incandescent strings draw more power per string than LED. Always check your specific product's rating rather than estimating.
