How this calculator works

product per 1,000 sq ft = target N lbs ÷ (nitrogen % ÷ 100)
total product needed = product per 1,000 sq ft × (lawn area ÷ 1,000)

The nitrogen percentage on a bag's N-P-K label tells you what share of the product's weight is actual nitrogen — dividing your target nitrogen amount by that percentage gives the total weight of product needed to deliver it.

Worked example

A 5,000 sq ft lawn, 32-0-4 fertilizer, targeting 1 lb of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft:

  1. Product per 1,000 sq ft: 1 ÷ 0.32 ≈ 3.13 lbs.
  2. Total product: 3.13 × (5,000 ÷ 1,000) ≈ 15.6 lbs.
  3. With a 40 lb bag: 15.6 ÷ 40 ≈ 0.39 → buy 1 bag.

Reading an N-P-K label

The three numbers on a fertilizer bag, like 32-0-4, show the percentage by weight of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K). A 32-0-4 bag is 32% nitrogen by weight, so a 40 lb bag contains 12.8 lbs of actual nitrogen — the rest is potassium, filler and other ingredients. This calculator only uses the nitrogen figure, since lawn fertilizer programs are most commonly built around a target nitrogen rate.
