How this calculator works
Ice melt is rated by how many pounds it takes to treat 1,000 square feet, so the calculator scales that rate to your actual area, then converts pounds to whole bags:
lbs_needed = (area / 1000) × application_rate bags_needed = ceil(lbs_needed / bag_weight_lbs)
This is per application — a storm that needs re-treatment, or ice thick enough to need a second pass, will use this amount more than once. See the FAQ below on how thickness and temperature change what a single application should look like.
Worked example
A driveway (20 ft × 40 ft) plus a walkway (4 ft × 30 ft), rock salt at 20 lb/1,000 sq ft, 50 lb bags:
- Area: (20 × 40) + (4 × 30) = 920 sq ft.
- Ice melt needed: (920 ÷ 1,000) × 20 ≈ 18.4 lb.
- Bags: ceil(18.4 ÷ 50) = 1 bag — well under a full bag for one application.
For a larger 5,000 sq ft commercial lot at the same rate: (5,000 ÷ 1,000) × 20 = 100 lb, or ceil(100 ÷ 50) = 2 bags — showing how quickly larger areas move past a single-bag purchase.

Rather than quoting a national average that's stale the day it's published, this calculator prices the job from what you actually enter. Give a price per bag, and it's multiplied straight through against the bag count. The estimate is per application — a season's total cost depends on how many times you apply it.

How much ice melt does an average driveway need per application?
A typical 2-car driveway, around 600 to 800 sq ft, commonly uses roughly 12 to 20 lb of standard rock salt per application — well under a full 50 lb bag for one treatment.
Does application rate change with ice thickness or temperature?
Yes. Thicker ice needs a higher rate or repeat applications. Sodium chloride also loses effectiveness quickly below about 15 to 20°F, so colder conditions call for a higher rate or a different product like calcium chloride.
Calcium chloride vs sodium chloride vs other ice melt types — what are the differences?
Sodium chloride is cheapest but effective only down to about 15 to 20°F and corrosive. Calcium chloride works to about -25°F but costs more. Magnesium chloride is gentler on plants and concrete, effective to about 0°F.
Does pet-safe ice melt apply at the same rate as regular ice melt?
Not necessarily — pet-safe formulations often have different melting power per pound, so the recommended rate can be higher. Check the label and use the custom rate option here for the most accurate estimate.
